since 2002. Originally released in 1980 and known as
<I>Melt</I> for its Hipgnosis cover art, Peter Gabriel's third
solo album iswhere one of the most influential drum sounds
in modern music was accidentally invented. Gabriel banned
cymbals entirely and had Phil Collins play stripped-back,
toms-only beats. During one session, engineer Hugh
Padgham's talkback mic got left open by mistake, catching
Collins's drums through the studio's compressors and gates,
and the room exploded with a huge, cannon-blast snare sound
nobody had heard before: gated reverb, the effect that would
go on to define '80s pop and rock production, from Prince to
Bruce Springsteen. That sound opens the album on "Intruder"
and runs straight through it. The record also delivered
Gabriel's first UK Top 5 hit in "Games Without Frontiers,"
featuring Kate Bush singing "Jeux sans frontières", and closes
on "Biko," his first outright political song and still one of the
most powerful protest songs ever recorded. This edition
marks the album's first vinyl reissue since 2002, half-speed
