The recording of Trout Mask Replica and the near starvation conditions of the musicians kept almost under house arrest as John French desperately tried to make sense of and transcribe the Captain's ideas into something that the band could work with, have passed into legend.
What emerged was one of the most original and challenging albums in history.
A masterpiece.
The first release of this album in 1969 was on the pink Straight label. The catalogue number is STS1053 & the matrix number etched into the run off area reflected this. The second release was still on Straight, but now with the 2MS2027 catalogue number on the label.
The fourth release of this album was on Reprise, with the catalogue number of 2MS2027 & the matrix number etched into the run off area reflected this.
This curious & legitimate third pressing, somehow fell between the Straight label and the Reprise release. The demand wasn't exactly huge at the time, but they had obviously shifted all of the Straight label copies before switching officially to Reprise, so this puppy came out on Bizarre.
Not only is it on the blue Bizarre label, but it also carries the matrix numbers for both the Straight release AND the Reprise release in the run off area. The mad idea comes to mind here that it could possibly have fallen BETWEEN the two pink Straight label releases. Did some pressing plant use the wrong labels ?
After all this time we'll probably never know, so I've called this a third press, although it could really be a 1½ or 2½ depending on the circumstances !
How many of this curiosity were pressed, I don't know. I've seen plenty on Straight, plenty on Reprise, but we've never had one on Bizarre before.
Condition:
The sleeve shows the usual shelfwear associated with US sleeves of this type & period and there is a degree of the classic ringwear present. That said, with the exception of a little scuffing at the edges it is still holding up very well with a clearly readable spine and bright vivid colours inside the gatefold.
They had obviously had more than sufficient sleeves printed as this 1969 Straight sleeve was still to be found on releases sent out in the mid Seventies!
The vinyl remains in excellent condition with very little sign of play. Upon very close inspection, a couple of light surface scuffs are all that can be seen. This, and a few faint spindle marks around the centre hole, is it.
The sleeve can easily be replaced, should you want it to look more new than period, but the Bizarre labelled vinyl might prove a little more tricky.
Luckily, with the vinyl looking like this, you'll probably never want to.
A very nice copy of this extremely hard to find third pressing !
