FANFARLO Reservoir (2009 UK 11-track CD album - Fanfarlo is a London-based indie pop band formed in 2006 by the Swedish musician Simon Balthazar. BLOOD RED SHOES Fire Like This (2010 UK 10-track vinyl LP - Produced by Mike Crossey [2008's 'Box Of Secrets'], using the facilities of his new Liverpool studio The Motor Museum, and recorded to analogue tape with the bare minimum of guitar or vocal overdubs, Blood Red Shoes' second album slices away a lot of the gloss in favour of a gutsy, raw and more intense sound. Intensity is the word. 'Fire Like This' is simply exceptional rock music, steeped in a knowledge of your alt-rock staples – Nirvana, Babes In Toyland, Drive Like Jehu – but with its own fingerprint. 'Don't Ask' and 'Count Me Out' harness scything guitars and loud-quiet dynamics like they never went out of fashion. But there's more ambitious fare here, too. Take dramatic seven-minute closer 'Colours Fade', originally released as a free download from their website, or the tender, fraught 'When We Wake', a sombre mediation on mortality that nonetheless burns with hot emotional force. HAWKWIND At The BBC - 1972 (2010 UK 24-track 2-CD album set - 'At The BBC 1972' captures the band just after the surprise of the UK no. 3 hit single in July with the classic 'Silver Machine', and before their live experience 'Space Ritual' whichwas recorded on tour later in the year. Whilst the majority of this 2-CD release is made up of the live set recorded for the 'BBC In Concert' programme, it opens with a previously unreleased session recorded for Johnnie Walker featuring a shortened version of the 'Doremi Fasol Latido' album classic 'Brainstorm' and a version of the then hit single 'Silver Machine', featuring Lemmy on vocals as per the single. The stereo version has long been in the domain of the bootleggers as an off-air recording known the as 'Broadcast' version. This mix was in fact distributed by the BBC for broadcast internationally and features an edited 'Brainstorm', missing approximately 4 minutes from the front of the song, a shorter 'Welcome To The Future' and 'Electronic No. 1' [not indexed on the previous CD release], but a longer 'Countdown' introduction!)
