Condition :-
This is one exciting Blue Note original we have never stocked before. We only tend to find reissues of this sort of thing but not today. The pasted sleeve has succumbed to a degree of general storage wear, mostly forgiveable for its age. There is some corner creasing & scuffing & only a half inch split at the corner edge of the bottom opening. The panels both sides are lightly discoloured [small number annotation on the back top right] but nothing that upsets the print. All text remains clearly legible & the cover is Very Good-. It's worth stopping a moment just to take in how good that cover is. A Reid Miles designed & Francis Wolff photographed classic.
The labels have no writing or tears & no tax stickers. There are spindle marks by the centre hole to highlight past action on the turntable. The deep groove & Lexington address is present both sides. This was released before the label became an incorporated company & registered trademark & was just a shoe-string operation from one New York office, meaning there is no 'INC' or 'R' lettering after 'Blue Note' on the labels. There is a distinct flat edge.
The Rudy Van Gelder initials 'RVG' & the 'ear' logo are both etched into the runoff area. The matrices, like the 'ear' are hand scratched. A combination of Van Gelder's sound engineering & Plastylite pressing is well & truly the 'golden age' of highest quality, Blue Note pressings.
The vinyl has received a deep cleanse on a top of the range Matrix machine. It grades a remarkable VG/VG+. Playback is otherworldly - you really need to buy at least one of these original Lexington pressings to understand what all the fuss is about! The first side shows a little mild cosmetic wear & the odd faint hairline or scuff but nothing that upsets playback. There are no raised scratches either side, just one or two tiny surface marks in the odd spot. The second side appears even better with light evidence of play only. Just a little faint background surface is detectable at the start or during the quieter moments. Very hard to find in any condition. Although far from mint, this is nonetheless a respectable & serviceable example of one extremely rare record our side of the pond.
