Pink Floyd A Saucerful Of Secrets - 1st Export - EX UK vinyl LP album (LP record)
|
Tracklisting / Additional Info: |
It was common practice in the UK to press a small quantity of domestic release LPs as Export only copies. Sometimes they would use UK release type labels, for example the Parlophone presses of some Export Beatles LPs, and sometimes they would need to press on a different label, for example the London releases of some Export Rolling Stones LPs.
This first release for Export copy was pressed with Odeon labels, as 'Columbia' was a registered trademark of CBS in other parts of the world & not a trademark of EMI. Subsequent releases of this album had the familiar boxed logo Columbia labels with gold Odeon stickers over the label logos, making this the only UK Export release with Odeon labels on the disc.
Like subsequent issues, this release used the UK printed Garrod & Lofthouse sleeve with a gold Odeon sticker placed over the Columbia logo on the back. This copy does not have the sticker on the back any longer.
Documenting a time where their eccentric genius, Syd Barrett, was fast deteriorating with mental health problems, this is the only Pink Floyd album that features five menbers. Syd himself appears on just three, contributing slide guitar to Remember A Day and second guitar on 'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun', as well as on his sole songwriting contribution, Jugband Blues.
Condition:
The Sleeve is the classic front laminated flipback type, common at EMI at the time. As previously mentioned, this is identical to a regular UK edition. Given that the laminate fails to reach the edges of the sleeve at any point by over a quarter of an inch in some places, standard with 'floating laminate' to varying degrees, this copy has survived extremely well. Visually, there is just a little light shelfwear and some minor creasing to the laminate in places around the edges & at the corners. The spine is still clearly readable and even those areas at the edges not protected by laminate show very little wear. You would be hard pressed to find a copy of this in better condition.
The labels are silver on black Odeon with 'LONG PLAYING' text at the top and 'MADE IN GT BRITAIN' text at the bottom. These carry the PSCX catalogue number rather than the later issues which carried the SCX prefixes. There are just a few spindle marks visible around the centre hole and no wear apparent to the labels at all.
At the risk of boring you, I shall still tell you that the matrices end '-1', even though they all did. Defying its forty five years, the vinyl still shines nearly as much as it would have when new. Although it has been played, it has obviously been extremely well cared for and played on good equipment. It still retains just the two grooves it was born with, with just a couple of light surface scuffs to show for its forty five years. For a copy to remain in EX-/EX condition like this is very unusual.
A very nice copy of this extremely rare first UK export edition LP in almost as good a condition as you are ever likely to see. In thirty years of trading and scouring the world for things just like this, we have only seen one better. If you have been looking for a copy of this very rare release, then this could be the one you need - Don't miss out.
