Condition :-
What better place to start than with the cover. Worthy of framing alone, this sleeve depicts a piece that was commissioned by Blue Note from an illustration designed by a young Andy Warhol. The flowered shirt design is a telling example of his early work & more flamboyant style of print-making, with hints of what was to come. It is rounded off with his flowing facsimile signature at the bottom.
Condition wise, the sleeve retains its colours beautifully. There are no blemishes that stand in its way. What there is in terms of wear is mostly around the edges. There are two half inch splits at the top & bottom & a few small similar thumbnail splits in the middle, all by the opening. Further to this, there are two 2" paper splits centre at the bottom & spine edges. It is far from mint, but it's an original. It is what it is, & has survived over half a century to tell its story with grace. The back panel is lightly yellowed with age with clearly legible text & the original import tax sticker intact & just a little faint corner fading.
The heavyweight vinyl has raised edges & clearly reveals the 'RVG' [Rudy Van Gelder] machine stampers in the run-offs both sides, in addition to the 'ear' etchings & catalogue/matrix details. There is a 'deep groove' present both sides & no 'r' in the 'Blue Note' label lettering, indicating a pre-trademark pressing. The earliest & the best for audiophile Blue Note collectors. The labels reveal a few faint spindle marks to indicate past action on the turntable, with no blemishes to upset the print. Tasty.
The vinyl has received a deep cleanse on a top of the range Matrix machine. We have play tested both sides & by golly, does it sound HUGE. Many subsequent pressings of this album in the original mono tended to sound thin. What you have here is crystal clear & with BASS. No distortion or surface wear is evident. All instruments cut through & Johnny sounds SCARILY GOOD. A class example of Rudy Van Gelder technology. And what a performance!
The vinyl appears clean with no scratches or marks, maybe just a couple of ultra faint paper scuffs to be pedantic. These have no effect on play. If you can forgive the splits in the cover, what you have here is a gorgeous sounding example of a very rare, very first press example. Goes without saying..... Highly recommended, indeed.
