What were you doing on November 25th, 1996 ? If you weren't speed-dialling London's Virgin Radio station chances are you won't have one of these, let alone all seven. Following the release of their highly anticipated 'Made In Heaven' album the remaining members of Queen, along with Parlophone and Virgin Radio executives, together created a very special series of prizes to chase away any Monday blues and tempt you with some red-hot Queen booty. Throughout the day Virgin Radio played a selection of tracks from the album and determined callers lucky enough to get through and successfully answer a Queen-related question were able to choose one from seven of the Made In Heaven album tracks as a special edition 12" single, housed in a custom Queen Crest logo sleeve.
There were only 12 complete sets manufactured and after an aborted attempt with the first disc - VIRGIN1 - production recommenced utilising the unique catalogue number sequence VIRGIN2 to VIRGIN8. Incidentally, all the 12" singles are one-sided. Rumour has it that one copy of VIRGIN1 was incorrectly pressed as a two-sided disc and when the error was discovered that sole record was destroyed. We've never seen one, but if you have evidence of its existence we'd love to hear about it. Consequently 'Heaven For Everyone' (VIRGIN2) became the first disc in the sequence, which follows thus:-
VIRGIN2 - Heaven For Everyone VIRGIN3 - A Winter's Tale VIRGIN4 - Mother Love VIRGIN5 - Let Me Live VIRGIN6 - You Don't Fool Me VIRGIN7 - It's A Beautiful Day VIRGIN8 - I Was Born To Love You
By the end of the day there had been 14 competition winners. Each of them received their one chosen record and as an added bonus that one record was AUTOGRAPHED by Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. We've only seen two of the actual prize-winners records for sale, and we bought them both.
Prizes on the day account for 14 of the 84 records (12 sets of 7 = 84, or it did when I was at school). So, what about the rest? Well, some complete sets were given as a 'thank you' to the radio executives although none of those were autographed. As there really are only 14 individual records that have signatures collating an entire set of all seven with original autographs is as close to impossible as makes no difference!
Luckily for the rest of us non-competition winners, the past decade has seen a few complete non-autographed sets make their way to the collectables market, which makes the task of trying to piece together a complete set from individual purchases a lot easier. The 7 discs we have on offer here is one of those 'executive thank you' sets. We have seen some individual records sell via eBay and for every individual disc that sells it makes the task of putting together the whole set that much more difficult, so this is your chance to scoop the lot in one go!
Queen remain one of the most important bands of the past 3 decades and, as interest in their We Will Rock You show and live dates with Paul Rodgers has shown, they remain at the top of their game. Their first 'blue-chip' collectable was the appropriately coloured blue vinyl Bohemian Rhapsody single. This wonderful set continues that legacy very well.
