Angelo Badalamenti was originally brought onto Blue Velvet simply as a vocal coach for star Isabella Rossellini, before director David Lynch asked him to write a song for the film after failing to secure the rights to This Mortal Coil's "Song to the Siren." That song became "Mysteries of Love," sung by Julee Cruise, and it launched one of cinema's most enduring composer-director partnerships, one that would go on to shape Twin Peaks, Wild at Heart and Mulholland Drive. Badalamenti also appears briefly on screen in the film itself, playing the piano-bar bandleader behind Rossellini's rendition of the title song. This edition marks 40 years since the film's release, gathering Badalamenti's original score alongside period needle-drops from Roy Orbison, Ketty Lester and Bill Doggett. This new edition is presented in a special collectible foil metallic mirrorboard picture sleeve, with a hype sticker quoting the film's line "It's a strange world, isn't it?". Recommended).
