Richard and KarenCarpenter signed to A&M Records in
April 1969 after label co-founder Herb Alpert heard their
demo tape, delivering their first hit seven months later with a
stripped-down, ballad reworking of the Beatles' "Ticket to
Ride." Their genuine breakthrough came the following year,
when Alpert handed Richard a Burt Bacharach and Hal David
song that had sat unused for years: "(They Long to Be) Close
to You." Neither sibling was especially keen on the song at
first, and Richard reportedly told the label that if the record
didn't become a hit, it would be the biggest stiff A&M had ever
released. It went to number one instead, staying there for
four weeks and winning the pair a Grammy.
That
single opened a run that would define the decade: "We've
Only Just Begun," "Superstar," "Rainy Days and Mondays,"
"Top of the World" and "Yesterday Once More" among them,
all shaped by Richard's arrangements and Karen's voice. This
collection also includes two solo tracks: Karen's "Still Crazy
After All These Years" and Richard's "Karen's Theme," written
and dedicated to his sister following her death in 1983. This
edition is pressed on 180-gram crystal clear vinyl,
individually numbered from a limited edition of 7,500 copies,
housed in a gatefold sleeve with a 4-page booklet of liner
