CHICO BUARQUE Vida (Limited Edition 2026 UK/EU 12-track
LP pressed on Green
Vinyl. Originally released in December 1980,
Vida finds Chico Buarque at 36, in a period of lyrical
and musical exuberance, revisiting songs already made
famous by other artists - including "Bastidores," which had
revived Cauby Peixoto's career, and "Morena de Angola," a
hit for Clara Nunes - and reclaiming them as a formidable
interpreter in his own right. The record arrived as Brazil
edged toward redemocratisation, at a time when Buarque
found himself less directly targeted by censorship than in
previous years. The playful, dancehall samba "Deixa a
Menina" folds in a feminist rejoinder to Geraldo Pereira's
classic "Sem Compromisso," while the Cuban-inflected title
track, composed for Marilena Ansaldi's play "Geni," offers a
bittersweet meditation on mortality and love of life, set
against Francis Hime's sublime orchestration. Vida
represents the high point of Buarque's creative partnership
with Hime, who arranged ten of the album's twelve tracks,
bringing delicacy to "Mar e Lua" and "Qualquer Canção" and
grandeur to "Fantasia." The Tom Jobim collaboration "Eu Te
Amo," written for Arnaldo Jabor's film of the same name,
features Jobim's own arrangement and piano. "Bye Bye
Brasil," co-written with Roberto Menescal for Cacá Diegues'
film, appears here in a bolero-inflected arrangement distinct
from its funkier 1979 single release, with Buarque's lyrics
reflecting on Brazil's transformation across the preceding
decade. Widely regarded as a cornerstone of MPB,
Vida remains a touchstone of the genre's golden era.
