SUPERTRAMP Free As A Bird (2026 UK/EU 9-track LP pressed on 180-gram heavyweight black vinyl, Half Speed Mastered by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios. The ninth and final Supertramp studio album of new material for A&M Records, originally released in October 1987. A deliberate change of direction, Free as a Bird stepped back from the progressive rock sound of its predecessor in favour of synthesised dance beats, drum machines and a more modular recording approach. Chief songwriter Rick Davies later reflected that the machine-led method caused the band to "lose the band spirit a little bit", though acknowledged it contained "some interesting songs." The album marked the first Supertramp recordings to feature guitarist and vocalist Mark Hart, who would later become a full member, alongside trumpet player Lee Thornburg. Club chart-topper 'I'm Beggin' You' was the set's commercial highlight. The group disbanded following the subsequent tour and did not reconvene until 1997. The picture sleeve depicts a photograph of Georges Braque in his studio, painting a stylized bird which is replicated in the cover by a cut-out section contrasted against the solid blue of the inner sleeve beneath.
