Pink Floyd The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn - 1st (b) - VG UK vinyl LP album (LP record)
|Tracklisting / Additional Info:
Background & Condition
The album was released on August 5th, 1967 and one month later it was released in stereo.
The album's title comes from the title of the seventh chapter of Kenneth Grahame's 'The Wind in the Willows'!
The mono mixes of each track were done at separate sessions, as it was the main format.
The whole stereo album mix was a one day thing, so this really is the definitive mix of this classic album with significant differences to the stereo mix.
Subtle changes in effect abound, moment to moment gradations that can alter the flow of an entire track. For example, Syd Barrett’s whoops and shouts on 'Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk' are simply dripping with delay and the environment constantly morphs, unlike the stereo version which is 'fixed'.
The coda of 'Flaming' is shorter than on the stereo version, as is 'The Gnome'. There's a whole layer of organ missing on the stereo mix at the start of 'Interstellar Overdrive' with a bongo fade-out and seriously different parts in 'Pow R Toch H'.
As the engineer said many years later "The omission of things in the stereo mixes was really just because of the time - or lack of it - spent over these"
Mono was the de-facto standard and the stereo mix, like 'Sgt Pepper', was pretty much cobbled together as an afterthought.
Still with the original EMI catalogue inner enclosed, the Ernest J. Day & Co. sleeve reveals just a little minor shelfwear, the flipbacks are nice & secure with the spine being perfectly legible with some creasing to the laminate, the print remains bright, vivid & unblemished, with 'File Under Popular' printed in the top right on the back & '6709' release date bottom right.
There are no rips or splits, the unlaminated back has just a little age discoloration, there is also an indentation by the band members credits causing a small amount of paper loss.
The labels are the blue and black Columbia design with "The Gramophone Co Ltd" and "Sold In UK Subject To...." text. These labels feature a slightly different font, with the layout of the song titles and credits altered. For example, the songwriting credits for Interstellar Overdrive on side 2 have been moved to under the song title as opposed to being next to the title.
The matrix numbers are:-
XAX 3419-2 GD 1 / XAX 3420-1 GD 1
Which confirm that this is a first issue.
There are a few light spindle marks visible but otherwise the labels are clean & all text clearly legible.
The vinyl has been professionally cleaned & played. The start of each side begins with a little light distortion in passages before the track gets going. The surface noise is not obtrusive to the actual music and settles down in time for the song to properly kick off. The disc plays through a treat, despite a few marks visible, this does not affect play & the quiet passages between each track has just a little background sound. The whole disc plays through just fine & sounds much, much better than it looks.
Thanks due to the superior quality of the 1960's vinyl pressings, when played the effect is minimised. This looks like a VG but plays a nice EX-.
A great chance to grab a respectable first issue MONO for a great price!
