BACKGROUND
This was the third Vee-Jay release of the 'Introducing The Beatles' album. The first release included two songs that became the subject of a law suit with Beechwood Music over the rights to use 'P.S. I Love You' & 'Love Me Do'. This was followed by an Injunction in January 1964 preventing the use of those two songs by Vee-Jay. Their response to this was to issue the record again with 'Ask Me Why' & 'Please Please Me' replacing the offending titles. This became the second version. With law suits coming thick and fast, a settlement was reached with Capitol Records that allowed them to continue to sell and market the sixteen Beatles recordings that they had, but only until October 15th 1964, when the rights would revert to Capitol. This left Vee-Jay with a dilemma. They only had sixteen songs to play with and only four months in which to sell them. By this time, The Beatles had become the biggest band in the world.
With The Beatles 1964 US tour running nicely from 19th August to 20th September, they decided to capitalise on their available catalogue by issuing this, the third release of 'Introducing The Beatles', but going all out with a new title and a deluxe cover. They retained the labels of the second version of 'Introducing The Beatles', but the new cover was a serious departure.
The cover itself is a three quarter gatefold which opens to a pasted full colour inner spread with biography details of each Beatle, their favourite foods and other trivia. The back of the cover has pictures of each Beatle with a heart underneath designed for you to paste your own picture there as well as that of three of your friends underneath your favourite!
About 100,000 of these were stickered with a selection of venue names from the tour and 'Souvenir of their apperance at ...' text to maximise sales in those areas. Only approximately two percent of the final sales were of the Stereo version. This is the Mono release & an unstickered sleeve.
The Real Ones vs. The Counterfeits
Most Vee-Jay releases have been counterfeited over time & this one was no exception. Luckily, to tell the genuine from the counterfeit in this case is very easy and does not require a microscope. Simply, the counterfeits do not reproduce the three quarter gatefold but are single pocket sleeves with spine titles reading 'Songs And Pictures Of The Fabulous Beatles' with no 'Stories' reference. There is also a test that hold true with most of the Vee-Jay releases. If the band name appears BELOW the spindle hole, then it's a fake. All the genuine Vee-Jay releases have 'The Beatles' ABOVE the spindle hole.
OK, to business ...
The sleeve is the big one for this disc and this copy remains in lovely condition. There is a small amount of scuffing at the edges but this is far from extreme and certainly the best we have seen in a very long while. The only thing to note is that this record was once owned by a Paul fan and there is evidence that there was once a happy teenage girl's photograph affixed in the heart below Paul on the rear of the sleeve. There are a couple of areas of paper loss here, leading to the eradication of the 'RE HERE' segment of the 'PICTURE HERE' text in the heart and another area of loss under this. Both areas have been retouched in black to match the sleeve, so the effect is minimal really & just goes once again to prove that this is exactly what it appears to be. The first two inches of the top & bottom seams have split near the openng but luckily no attempt has been made to tape repair these as so often happens, leaving the sleeve in authentic vintage condition.
The vinyl is spectacular and would easily grade as excellent with little sign of play. A very nice copy indeed.
So there you have it. This is a genuine Vee-Jay from 1964 in far above average condition. All ready for a new home.
