Dick Swings...
Encouraged by my recent discovery of Pharoah Sanders' post Coltrane solo work, I decided to revisit some of John Coltrane's solo work too.

Specifically I listened to 'A Love Supreme', 'Blue Train', 'Soultrane', 'Giant Steps' & a work with Pharoah Sanders, 1965's 'Meditations'.

Already a veteran as part of the 'First Great Quintet' of Miles Davis, 'Blue Train' was his first solo work for Blue Note & featured the trumpet work of Lee Morgan along with the legendary rhythm section of Paul Chambers & Philly Joe Jones. It was a hint of things to come & is a classic - highly recommended.

'Soutrane' is a greater exploration of his 'sheets of sound' style, ably supported by Paul Chambers, Red Garland & Art Taylor. Coltrane himself viewed this as one of his favourite sessions - another classic.

'Giant Steps' was the first to feature exclusively Coltrane compositions, retaining Art Taylor & Paul Chambers in the 'engine room' but with Tommy Flanagan taking piano duties. This was the last album to still sit in with his BeBop history & is was ranked at 102 in Rolling Stones' 500 Greatest Albums of all time.

As his harmonic imporvisation & melodic phrasing style developed, he was soon to move to a more experimental 'modal' style, which enables me to jump quite nicely a few years to 'Meditations'.
Now, this is not easy listening. It is to 'Blue Train' as Absynthe is to Cola.

You are assaulted by overblown sax almost from the off with 'Trane & Pharoah panned hard left & right. Although the album is segmented into compostitions, it is played as two continuous pieces.
If you are putting your toe into the water for the first time with John Coltrane or avant-garde freeform Jazz, this is one to work up to as it's very heavy indeed. There are alternate versions of some of the compositions that are less hard hitting that were recorded earlier without Pharoah or Rashied Ali & released as 'First Meditations' that might be worth a listen first.

For someone that died very young (he was only 40), Coltrane left a wealth of music behind him & like Miles wasn't afraid to push boundaries. I enjoyed re-discovering the albums that put him amongst the greats.
