The BRIT Awards 2006 is proud to announce that the award for The Outstanding Contribution to British Music will this year go to Paul Weller. The legendary singer will accept his award at the glittering BRITs ceremony to be held in Earls Court Arena on 15 February 06. The show goes out as-live on ITV1 the following night. Viewers can also look forward to an exclusive BRITs performance of some of Paul?s trademark hits. Paul Weller shot to fame in 1977 as lead singer and guitarist in iconic mod band The Jam. He later formed the Style Council, influencing younger bands with the newest sounds of the day. Since 1991 Paul Weller has enjoyed a tremendous solo career, producing seminal albums Wildwood, Stanley Road and of course his critically-acclaimed most recent release, 2005?s As Is Now. A huge number of bands, including the Prodigy and Oasis name Paul Weller as a major influence in their career. The Outstanding Contribution to British Music award is a gift to the artist from the BPI, the British Record Companies association which organises the BRIT Awards. Its chairman Peter Jamieson says ?The Outstanding Contribution Award is the highest honour the UK record industry can bestow. Paul Weller is an artist who scores on every measure and typifies the range and quality of British music at its best.? Recent recipients of the Outstanding Contribution to British Music award include Sir Bob Geldof in 2005, Duran Duran in 2004 and Tom Jones in 2003. |

The BRITs have been celebrating all that is fantastic about UK music for over a quarter of a century. The first ever Brit Awards show was held in 1977 as part of the Queen's Silver Jubilee. It was a celebration then of 25 years of the British Music Industry. Winners on the night included greats such as The Beatles and Cliff Richard. The next awards were held five years later. They were initially known as the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) awards and that tricky name stuck for a further seven years until the first BRITs. In it's time the show has gone from being thought of as peer recognition to being regarded as one of the international music industry's most important awards. There have been hundreds of awards handed out to many many artists. One of the most enduring memories that people have of the Brits are those fabulous moments that become TV legend. Do you remember Jarvis attacking Jacko ? Did you sit through the Mick Fleetwood, Samamtha Fox nightmare? Maybe it was the 'emerging talents' of Ms.Geri Halliwell you recall ! Or was it Justin Hawkin's catsuits? Whatever it is that you love about the Brit Awards you can be sure there will be more controversy, more fashion faux-pas and amazing live performances again in 2006. |
