Queen 1974 Commemorative Tour Plaque - Reframed UK memorabilia
Tracklisting / Additional Info: 1974 was a big year for Queen. After a successful tour supporting Mott The Hoople at the end of '73, Queen did a headlining tour during the first part of '74 and whilst on this tour on March 3rd Seven Seas Of Rhye was released and became the bands first British hit single. The album that followed, Queen II entered the charts at a staggering number 7 and peaked at number 4. Queen then resumed their role supporting Mott The Hoople - this time on their first US tour, during which Brian was struck down with Hepatitis after their New York concert and had to fly home.

On returning from the US with momentum building, the buzz surrounding the band started to increase and in July they entered the studio to work on their third album, Sheer Heart Attack whilst Brian was recovering. After the album was completed the band decided to back on the road for a more extensive UK tour to promote the upcoming album. They turned to Mel Bush to promote the tour, having previously worked with him during their Hoople tour the previous year.

The tour began at the Manchester Palace Theatre, supported by Hustler and lasted 18 nights, culmanating in two nights at London's prestigious Rainbow venue. During the tour, on November 8th whilst Queen were in Glasgow, Sheer Heart Attack was released in the UK. The US release was four days later. By the time Queen arrived at The Rainbow on November 19th both Sheer Heart Attack and the single Killer Queen were at number 2 in the respective album and single charts. A second night at the Rainbow was hastily arranged after all tickets for the first show sold out in just two days - remember this was well before the days of online purchasing!

Both nights at the Rainbow were filmed and shown in British cinemas. In 1992 this footage was remastered and a video was included in the box set 'Box Of Trix'. It has yet to be released on DVD officially.

Overall the tour sold out and even the music press had to concede that Queen were here to stay.

Mel Bush was so happy with the success of the tour that he commissoned the manufacture of a limited number of specially etched brass plaques, as it was becoming something of a tradition that Mel had started in 1973 when he promoted David Bowie's Aladdin Sane tour and later repeated when he promoted Mott The Hoople's 1973 UK tour.

With each of the acts he promoted, once a successful tour was over, Mel would commission a commemorative plaque or mirror as a souvenir of the event. Usually these would be presented to the artist, with a couple of additional copies kept in his own personal archive.

This item has remained in the archive for 34 years but no that Mel is semi-retired, he has decided to part with his treasured archive of mirrors and plaques and we have been enlisted to help him find good homes for his collection. Each item from the archive will be accompanied by a letter from Mel detailing its origins and confirming its authenticity.

The design of this plaque features the bands name,a list of the tour dates with the words 'SOLD OUT' 'Many Thanks, Mel Bush'. The bands crest is etched in the bottom. All text is in purple. The plaque measures 12" x 13" including the frame

Whilst in storage, over the course of 34 years tarnishing has developed on the brass, however we have not tried to restore it due to the risk of damaging this precious artifact. We feel it adds an air of character about the piece. Also the original frame became detatched and so this has been recently replaced with a simple black frame very similar to the damaged one, in keeping with the original design.

A very rare and unusual piece of Queen memorabilia
