This presentation 'Platinum' award disc is in truly exceptional condition. Awards from this period are extremely rare; often with faded backcloths and chipped discs, consequences of inappropriate positioning and general wear and tear. This genuine B.P.I. Certified sales award formed part of a treasured collection for many years, during which time it was never displayed in direct sunlight and, apart from mild evidence of previous handling, it has a wonderful patina commensurate with its 30+ year age. The original glass has been replaced with plexi-glass - safer for both storage and shipping.
During the period in which this album achieved its platinum status, sales were measured on £ value sold, as opposed to the current system of units sold. In fact Band On The Run was the first ever UK album to be awarded 'Platinum' status! BPI Certified awards were actually only introduced in April 1973 - Band On The Run was released later that same year - and performance was based on the monetary value of sales to the trade each week. It was not until January 1978 that the basis for qualification was replaced with a system rewarding unit sales.
Therefore, the dedication plaque reads, “To recognise the sale, in the United Kingdom, of more than £1,000,000 worth of the APPLE Long Playing Album 'BAND ON THE RUN'”
As usual, the plaque is mounted in the bottom right corner of the award. To the left is a reproduction of the cassette sleeve - the value of album sales would have accrued jointly for both the vinyl LP and cassette formats - the 'Platinum' disc is mounted centrally within the top half of the frame, complete with the Union Jack flag emblem in the top left corner.
This is, without doubt, the best looking Paul McCartney & Wings award we have ever seen. Arguably for their finest album - certainly their most successful - even the picture sleeve for Band On The Run has enjoyed more fame than have many so-called pop-personalities! With genuine Beatles' presentation awards now fetching many thousands of pounds, this award is perhaps slightly more affordable, but should enjoy the same future investment potential - failing that, just enjoy it!
