Widely regarded as the rarest of all The Cure's promotional singles, including the legendary 'The Blood' single, this obscure record rarely appears for sale. It was issued in 1980 as part of an exclusive promotional-only box set entitled 'On The Wave'. The box contained six singles, each one by a different UK artist; Protex, The Cure, The Invaders, The Akrylykx, Heroes and New Adventures. The complete box is now virtually impossible to find.
This 'Boys Don't Cry' single is housed in a unique textured black and white picture sleeve. It has a similar title arrangement to the regular UK 'soldier' sleeve. Inset towards the centre of the sleeve is a black and white image of the Three Imaginary Boys album cover art. The back cover is mostly covered with a brief Spanish language biography, along with the 'Ejemplar Gratuito Prohibida Su Venta' promotional wording and the usual label credits and catalogue number.
Being white, and textured, the sleeve deteriorates easily and on the rare occasion you do see them they are usually in very poor shape. Thankfully this copy has been well looked-after by its previous owner. There are none of the usual seam splits, the internal flipbacks are at full strength and show no signs of wear at all. There is a mild ringwear impression due to previous years when the single was stored inside its sleeve - we have obviously now removed it - there is also some evidence of fading and minor discolouration around the sleeve edges as well as the already mentioned 2mm tear at the opening with minimal creasing at the corners. These, however, are very minor when put into context of finding any near Mint condition Spanish record, especially one with a white cover!
The large centred labels are perfect. Also white, with simple black printed text, there are no blemishes whatsoever. The top of the label bears the title 'on the wave' in oversized lower case letters; the regular Polydor and Fiction Records logos are printed beneath.
The vinyl appears near Mint.
This is an outstanding copy and would be a wonderful item to add to any Cure collection.
