Grunge...last great US musical revival or catch all term applied by record companies?

The scene that is commonly accepted as the beginning of all things grunge was based in Seattle. A vibrant underground scene of dis-affected youths were playing a mix of heavy-ish metal and punk, the stylised stop-start dynamics and the, often, viscous lyrical assault set grunge out as, at the very least, a breath of fresh air to rock in the late-80s.

"Sub Pop Records" were the focal point of the early development of the scene. They released early noises from acts like Nirvana, Green River (who became Pearl Jam), Soundgarden and Mudhoney. Once the scene had been accepted like minded types across the world had the essential bandwagon on which to attach themselves. And so the scene became a badge and the badge became a brand. And with brands come brand leaders...

The band that fit the grunge tag better than any other, and the reason it became anything like as revered as it still is, are Nirvana. Once Nirvana crossed from Sub Pop to major label Geffen in the early 90's it was only a matter of time before the world heard the sound. Kurt Cobain and his merry band had everything, looks, tunes and, sadly, a history in the making.

After the death of Kurt (the now commonly accepted end) the grunge sound and the many varied bands which had sprung from it carried on. It's really just the nominer grunge that's faded from use.
