Chris Childs of Thunder talks exclusively to eil.com

Celebrated British rock band Thunder are releasing their brand new single The Devil Made Me Do It on December 4th. The single comes hot on the heels of yet another sold out UK tour in support of their fantastic new album Robert Johnson's Tombstone.

We managed to grab bass player Chris Childs for a quick chat about all things Thunder.

Chris Childs on bass!

The tour is coming to a close, how has it been this time around?

Personally I think it's been the best tour that I have done with the band - everything fell into place, the new songs worked great live and went down extremely well with the fans, we had a consistently good sound onstage, largely due to the new Marshall amps we were using, and everyone had a great time. It finished all too quickly.

The London show was probably one of the best I’ve seen from the band in a fair while and I've been on every UK tour since my first Thunder gig at Donnington in 1990. I went there for Aerosmith and came away a Thunder fan.

This is the power of Thunder live - once seen, never forgotten!

The new album Robert Johnson's Tombstone is a really solid album and you’ve contributed the song 'Last Man Standing' to the album. Tell me a little about the track.

At the start of the year Luke asked for us all to contribute ideas toward the new album, and this was a riff that I came up with. The title was actually for another song that I submitted.

Thunder

The last three albums have for many fans equaled the standard set by Back Street Symphony. That must be incredibly satisfying.

In the past we've constantly heard that Back Street Symphony was everyone's favourite, but at the meet and greets that we did on the tour there seems to be a general consensus that the new album has equaled or surpassed it.

The new single The Devil Made Me Do It is due out in the next few days. It went over really well live and seems the perfect choice for a single, was it always the main contender?

It's an immediate song - very simple and to the point, but most of the songs on the album came under scrutiny when the choice was to be made - I voted for My Darkest Hour, as I think that it's possibly one of the finest songs that Luke has ever written.

You have design all of the artwork for the singles, albums and DVDs now. How has that come about?

I taught myself how to use Photoshop, and the job just became mine by default. Obviously, running the record company as we do, there is a certain amount of "all hands on deck" and fortunately between us we have the necessary skills to cover all the bases.

The Devil Made Me Do It

As the last tour started you were still on the road with the illegal eagles. Is it hard juggling tours like that or is that part of the fun?

I wouldn't call it fun - it's all part of being a musician. It usually works out that one thing will conflict with another, and a choice has to be made between the two. Luckily this time I was able to do both except for one IE show.

You have also worked quite extensively with Paul Young. Those bass lines are a bassists dream aren’t they? Pino’s so damn good.

It was a dream gig for me, so much of the songs rely on the sound and style of Pino's playing. I've never played so many solos on a gig in my life!

Who are the other bass players or artists you have been inspired by?

My biggest inspiration at the moment is The Red Hot Chili Peppers, all great musicians and making real good music. Other musical inspirations are too numerous to mention - I like to keep an open mind.

Whose on your ipod (if you have one if not, what's been played on the tour bus and in the dressing room on this tour?)

I don't own an Ipod at the moment, songs in the dressing room range from Glen Campbell through to Led Zeppelin with everything in the middle. Mud, Sweet and Gary Glitter made an appearance one night!

The legendary Thunder Xmas show is rapidly approaching. What can we expect this time around?

Expect this year's show to be the best so far! There will be loads of new songs, loads of old songs, special guests aplenty and SNOW!

Finally, what does 2007 hold for Thunder and Chris Childs?

I start touring in January with Don Airey, doing 3 shows in Austria, then I'm out in Germany with Russ Ballard for 11 shows. There are plans afoot to tour extensively with Thunder, starting at the end of February, and we'll be appearing at UK festivals throughout the year the year.

Thanks to Chris for his time, Dave @ Thunder Management and Thinny for all their help as always.

The new THUNDER single The Devil Made Me Do It is released on 4th December
