Bruce Kulick talks exclusively to eil.com

Bruce Kulick

Bruce Kulick, legendary guitarist for music legends Kiss, Michael Bolton, Grand Funk Railroad and Meatloaf answers your questions exclusively for EIL.COM.

You have recently issued your second solo album 'Transformer'. Tell us about a few of the songs on the album and how it differs from your first release 'Audiodog'.

More vocal tunes, a different focus for Transformer, but I love them both. I love Jump the Shark and Crazy from Transformer.

You've mentioned previously that you'd be The Dog if you'd have worn KISS make Up. Did this have an influence your decision to call your debut solo cd Audiodog?

Really it has to do with my dog Joe... He has been my constant companion for 9 years now.. So he listens to my music ALOT!

Your Union buddy John Corabi guests on the track 'It's just My Life' and turns in yet another amazing vocal performance. Are there any Union plans in the Pipeline?

Nothing in the works for UNION...but that ESP with Eric Singer has john in the band, so we do some UNION songs live. They are on the CD called Live in Japan, and coming DVD called Live at the Marquee from Australia. You can order them both from Order from www.ericsingerproject.com John will also sing a song or two on my next solo disc.

How did you get involved with GFR and are there any touring plans for Europe?

I met Don Brewer years ago when I toured with Michael Bolton and we opened for Bob Seger. Don was playing drums for him. He is currently doing that now as well, as GFR doesn’t tour much during the winter months. Unfortunately there are no plans for GFR to tour Europe.

May 21st 1992 at Wembley Arena in London was one of the best KISS concerts I have ever witnessed. Looking back on your time with the band, do you think it was always inevitable that the original line up would reunite and would you have been tempted to don the Ace makeup had you been asked?

I was always aware that time would bring them back. When I joined the band the make up was very stale, but time took care of that! I was never asked to be Ace and I think it might be a bad thing for me to have done, but I never had to make that decision.

That's all from me Bruce here are the fans questions.

Bob Ezrin was very complimentary of you, saying 'he can play anything, in any style, in any key'. How was the experience of working with him on Revenge?   Neil Ranger, Aus

Hey Neil, We would change the tuning, change keys quickly in the studio to test different keys of the songs, and I was good at that. Bob Ezrin was amazing to work with.

KISS

Hi Bruce, My name is Jorge. I am a New Yorker living in the Netherlands. My  question is: Do you remember anything about the concert you played with Kiss on  July 7, 1990 in Albany during the Hot in the Shade tour? I ask this question  because it was the only show at which I was in the front row and it was probably  the greatest show I ever saw. Most fans would say that the original line-up put on  the best shows but I grew up watching you and Eric and to me this show holds a  special place in my heart.
Thanks for reading this and hoping I get a reply,   Jorge (Kiss-fan for life)

I know we were really in a groove for that tour. I am very happy you were so impressed!

Hi Bruce! As far as I know, your debut as a lead singer in Kiss were with "I walk  alone"(which is a great song!) from 1997´s album Carnival of souls. So my  question is: Did You try to get any lead vocals earlier in Your time whith Kiss, and did you have songs that you felt were "strong enough"? I have your TRANSFORMER album. It´s GREAT, listened to it a lot!    Henning Johnsen, Norway

I never requested to sing anything.. not even "I Walk Alone". That happened by Toby Wright the producer liking the demo of the song with me singing it. By the time I had to do my Audiodog disc, I was still learning to find my vocal style, but I think by Transformer, I was more confident. Thanks.

Bruce, you have played with some amazing musicians in you career. If you had to piece together your all time career band who would be in it?(including yourself ofcourse)    Beth, UK

Thanks for the question Beth. Well... I have played with so many amazing players.. on drums.. Don Brewer is so tight and solid he is wonderful to play with... Eric Singer says so!!! Bass wise, I have to admit that Jamie Hunting from UNION is a monster. As for singers, well I worked with some great ones from Paul Stanley to Michael Bolton.

Hello from West Babylon,New York. Hi Bruce my name is Robbie Wise and I thought you were GREAT in KISS! This might be upsetting but I remember reading that you were shot. Did it effect your playing. Do you carry extra security and finally did you ever jam with Larry Carlton or Marc Cohen.
Thanks and play NYC soon.   Robbie, NYC

I was a victim of a random crime, someone drunk and shooting wilding in the street. I dont need security like that! I was very lucky with how I got shot. Blessed actually... Never jammed with those guys.. but they are very talented.

Which was your favourite Ace, Vinnie or Mark solo to interpret when playing live with Kiss?    Katie Thomas, UK

Ace always has the most attitude to interpret. Vinnie and Mark were a different kind of challenge.

Carnival of Souls polarises Kiss fans even more than Music From The Elder. Given your huge input, how do you feel about the album 10 years after its commercial release?   Ed Austin, UK

Hi Ed, Well.. we wanted a heavy record.. I was not happy with the sound of it, Toby who co-produced was quite unhappy with Gene being very heavy handed with the mixes.. but that is old news.. the basic tracks sound awesome. I still think it has some great tunes...

Hi Bruce. I have been a KISS fan for 31 years now, and still holding strong. I have often wondered just how hard it was for you to fill the shoes of those who had "gone before you" as members of KISS? You have done a remarkable job of fitting in! You are an amazing guitarist, and I can't think of anyone better qualified to take the place of our beloved Ace.    Sue McGee, Paris, AR

Well.. you do it with respect and you make it your own... the fact that you admire what I did makes all the hard work pay off for me!

Dear Bruce! I'm from Austria and a long time KISS-Fan & Collector. I appreciate the time you was with KISS, so I'd like to know , if there are any plans or contacts with Gene & Paul for a comeback in the band as a lead guitarist? Furthermore I'd like to know, if you played any part in the forthcoming Paul Stanley Solo Album? Did you write a song for Paul, or did you play guitar at any song on the album? Thanks so much, Keep Kissing Wish you all the best.   Manfred Hubinger, Austria

I have no idea if I would ever perform with Gene or Paul in that way. I miss playing with them, but not my call. I played bass guitar on three tracks on Pauls solo disc.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the fans questions Bruce.

Not a problem it's always a pleasure.
