More commonly known since the internet boom as eil.com, this year is Esprit's 20th anniversary. In that time, they've built up an amazing
stock and currently have over 300,000 individual pieces currently available, with 200 new arrivals coming in each day. In charge of that process is Simon Wright who says, "the main percentage
of our customer base are still buyers and collectors of mainstream rock, pop and indie, but 60s vinyl and collectables are an expanding area. And catering for audiophiles has become a major part of our business".
Simon is one of 30 members of staff, which includes specialist buyers as far afield as Las Vegas, Hiroshima and Mexico City.
Selling purely mail order since day one, they've seen some changes over the last two decades. "Back in 1986 the CD was a relatively new format, so vinyl was the core business,” Simon told us.
"Over the years we've seen various trends come and go but vinyl continues to go from strength to strength with all generations appreciating the quality of a record despite living in the world of computer downloads!"
Esprit is certainly the place to turn for rare material - over the years they've had one of the seven U2 Trabants pass through their doors, and there's a constant stream of gold and platinum discs.
"Even after 11 years in the job, I'm surprised every day at what actually sells!" says Simon.
"From quantities of Hazel Dean CDs and Elvis Monopoly through to Deftones thongs and Prodigy socks".
