Every year the countries of Europe concentrate their musical talenst upon the Eurovision Song Contest. This year is the 48th Eurovision and is being held in Latvia. With an ironic wink we are having a Eurovison party of our own so come in and join in the celebrations... |

In the 1950s the European Broadcasting Union set about investigating ways of involving all of Europe in a joint light entertainment programme. A committee came up with the idea of a song contest, inspired by the very popular San Remo Festival in Italy. The idea was approved and it was decided that the first "Eurovision Grand Prix" would take place in 1956 in Switzerland. The first Eurovision involved seven countries: Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland and West Germany. The original contest rules allowed the participants to enter a maximum of two songs each, now this has been reduced to one. Each country selects their choice at a national final involving the public, making the choices as popular as possible. There is no rule on the language that the songs can be sung in. Only three and a half minutes is allowed for each performance. Jurys are made up of two delegates from each participating country, judging the contest and awarding a mark for each song (from 1 to 10). Little has changed over the many years of Eurovision. The audience numbers have grown, as have the number of participating countries but each year the hosts (the previous year's winners) put on lavish show and much smiling ensues! |

The claim often made about the Eurovision Song Contest is that the music and artists are rubbish. This claim doesn't stand up to much analysis, just look at the bands and singers who have been winners and entrants in Eurovision over the years; Celine Dion, Abba, Cliff Richard, Secret Garden, Lulu. All these artists have gone on to top charts around the world for years after their Euro arrivals. With only a slight hint of bias then we bring you some great Eurovision collectables... |
