BlueOrange , Essex UNITED KINGDOM Created Thu 1st Dec '11 13:44 (GMT)Review: Size, as they say, isn't everything. This little 10" gem is a must-have for the Beefheart collector's vault, with a mix of 2 Mirror Man tracks and 6 tracks from Safe As Milk albums - packed into a varnish-print picture sleeve displaying that iconic Cannes beach photo of the band. Manufactured in England and distributed and marketed for Buddah in 1983 by Precision Records & Tapes (aka PRT, the rebranded Pye label), it's just possible the Captain may have come up with the sleeve title when experiencing French negative waves during the excursion. My copy of "Music In Sea Minor" from EIL arrived about as pristine as an original copy. So, it's an A-major for service from me.[reply to this topic ]

BlueOrange , Essex UNITED KINGDOM Created Thu 16th Jun '11 15:20 (GMT) Edited Thu 16th Jun '11 15:22 (GMT)Review: I may be wrong, but the original UK issue did not come with a 180g over-sticker (which may have been on the later issues with the small 'W' logo on the label's radius text? Original UK's did not have that logo). IMHO, the original UK has a publication date of 1971 on labels, but was not released until Jan 1972. Which looks like this one, with the white logo bottom-right http://eil.com/shop/moreinfo.asp?catalogid=488120[reply to this topic ]
Re: CAPTAIN BEEFHEART The Spotlight Kid (1971 UK 10-track
stereo LP on the tan Reprise 'steamboat' label, picture sleeve
complete with card lyric insert. The sleeve has just a little
light shelfwear with some edgescuffing, whilst the vinyl is
graded EX-/VG+ with light scuffs/ hairlines and mild
spindlewear which have little or no impact on play. A great
copy of this Beefheart essential! K44162) £ 30.00, US$ 37.50 View this product
BlueOrange , Essex UNITED KINGDOM Created Thu 16th Jun '11 14:50 (GMT)Review: Pretty much a 2 vinyl counterpart to BMG's 1999 CD with bonus tracks, lurking under the Simply Vinyl cloak. A nice repro sleeve, encased in a front-flapped clear poly-wallet resplendent with closure sticker. Some interesting bonus tracks of outtakes from later sessions added, which can also be found on "I May Be Hungry, But I Sure Ain't Weird" and in their fullness on "It Comes To You In A Plain Brown Wrapper". Round it off with a copy of "Strictly Personal", that has a 'Safe As Milk' track, for full satisfaction.[reply to this topic ]
Re: CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & HIS MAGIC BAND Safe As Milk (Deleted 1999
UK limited edition Simply Vinyl 19-track 2-LP set pressed on
Heavyweight Virgin Vinyl - Originally released in September
1967, the debut album from Don Van Vliet & Co was a bold, tough-ass
distillation of Delta blues stomp and 60s garage punk swagger, fused
with a radically polyrhythmic and tempo-shifting style, pre-empting
the jagged angularity of late 70s post-punk by a good 10 years.
Features the classics 'Zig ZagWanderer', 'Electricity' & 'Dropout
Boogie', and now comes expanded with 7 Bonus Recordings
taken from the aborted 'Plain Brown Wrapper' sessions in late '67,
including 'Safe As Milk', 'On Tomorrow', 'Big Black Baby Shoes',
'Flower Pot', 'Dirty Blue Gene', 'Trust Us' & 'Korn Ring Finger';
presented in deluxe picture sleeve, housed in a sticker-sealed PVC
dust jacket) View this product
BlueOrange , Essex UNITED KINGDOM Created Thu 16th Jun '11 14:15 (GMT)Review: This appears to be a remastered issue of the previously remastered 1999 CD from Buddha, with updated inner artwork & liner notes too, along with the bonus tracks that were on that CD. Not a bad emulation of the original SAM, providing a interesting selection of the original sleeve's graphics & a few mini-pix of the band's venue appearances. A reasonable purchase for those not wishing to enter the heady realms of getting their hands on one of the original vinyls of this iconic debut album by the band, which had a strong input by Ry Cooder, before he departed after the Mt. Tamalpais concert incident.[reply to this topic ]

album - 'Safe As Milk' by Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band
REALLY IS an album without which no collection is complete! Originally

matt UNITED KINGDOM Created Tue 23rd May '06 17:12 (GMT)I May Be Hungry..... A pleasure to add this title today!! This is a seminal piece of work, this was definitely their best line-up, the guitar trade-offs between Jeff Cotton and Alex Snouffer is almost beyond belief! This and 'Mirror Man' (which actually preceded these recordings by about 6 months) are 2 of my fave Captain LPs, along with 'Safe As Milk'![reply to this topic ]
Re: CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & MAGIC BAND Strictly Personal (1994
UK 8-track CD album, their 2nd album originally released in
1968 represented an enormous departure from 1967's 'Safe
As Milk', incorporating more direct blues influences and
showcasing thealmost telepathic improvisatory abilities of
the guitar interplay between Alex Snouffer and Jeff Cotton!
Producer Bob Krasnow decided to use some 'psychedelic'
effects and washed many tracks thru with phasing, which the
band despised! Fear not, this is GENIUS!) £ 11.99, US$ 14.99 View this product
matt UNITED KINGDOM Created Thu 11th May '06 17:39 (GMT)An undisputable genius! I have to admit a deep admiration for Don Van Vliet a/k/a Captain Beefheart, having only relatively recently been turned on to him! But what an artist!! This is probably his most accessible album, but is still 'out there' enough in places to hint at the twisted darkness that lay beneath the surface! The remastered/expanded CD of this LP, along with its companion, 'The Mirror Man Sessions', are both essential purchases to get an idea of the Captain's early output! Not as angular as 'Trout Mask' but still way ahead of the game, in a pre-punk but almost post-punk kinda way![reply to this topic ]
