Hooray, hooray, it [was ] a holi - holi - day....: Not much to report for my buyers report this week - due to the fact I have been on holiday.  This week I...
  • Got up late every day - 3 days past noon!
  • Went to my nieces 3rd birthday party
  • Went to a wedding
  • Saw The Horrors in Norwich
On my return to work I find that the Duran Duran 2007 Calendar has been delivered and sold so many I've had to place a second order with the suppliers.  With the arrival of the Duran boys, the calendar collection for 2007 is pretty much complete.  Go to our calendar store for a full list of the titles available this year.

It's getting hot in Mexico...:
finally got a handful of an officially sanctioned by the band Status Quo 'Live in Mexico' DVD (click here to log your request before they arrive in the UK!), so if you have been looking for a long time for this, this is your chance to get it. I found another batch of 'Easy Listen' / 60's Lp's in almost unbelievable unplayed condition too so keep your eyes peeled next week as they are sorted and added. Separate to finding stock I did get my tickets for the Cult and Morrissey gigs which are playing in Mexico City in spare events obviously, also PSB are playing in a couple of weeks, so lot of concerts and hope also lot of promotion by record companies.. don't forget to add me to your favourites link's! to keep up with the latest arrivals as it's going to be really busy now before Christmas while the record companies are going to put all the fire to the oven!

Paul Weller - Prolific? A Veritable Plethora of Releases:

Hardcore since '77?  Perhaps.

What is certainly true is that nearly 30 years into his career, the output from PW and his record companies continues unabated.

Monday (23/10) saw the re-issue of Direction, Reaction, Creation, the Jam career retrospective in lavish book format.

Tonight (25/10) - Weller opens the BBC electric proms with a band featuring Amy Winehouse, Carl Barat and Richard Archer.

Next month (6/11), to coincide with a sold out nationwide tour Weller releases the the first of a series of singles - starting with Wild Blue Yonder - which is available in 3 track 7 & 2 track CD.

The same day Paul Weller ‘Hit Parade’ where Universal Island in conjunction with Polydor release a definitive singles collection will be available as single CD (presented in a standard jewel case complete with 24 page booklet and feature 23 career highlights) or a career-spanning 4-disc boxset ( 67 tracks in total, a dedicated Jam CD, a dedicated Style Council CD and two separate solo discs). This features a 60 page booklet complete with a full career overview from the infamous 70's NME scribesman Adrian Thrills. There is also a DVD which features TV appearances showcasing the singles from his career.

The release will coincide with the broadcast of a BBC commissioned full length documentary covering the entire length of Paul's career to date, including newly shot, in-depth interview footage, extremely rare performances and personal material, alongside interviews with key players from the last thirty years.

If that wasn't enough the The Jam Singles Box Sets are being re-issued (13/11) and re-mastered with the original artwork sleeves.  Each box will also contain a small booklet and a limited edition numbered print by Pennie Smith.

Finally, we are also closing in on a collection of 100+ Jam/TSC/Weller items that we hope to be putting on the site in the next week or so. Enough already? Fair enough, got to go....The Magic Number are kicking off this evening's preceedings followed by the main man himself.

Keep the Faith

John

Turning Japanese-a: Everything Japanese is coming my way today... our latest delivery from Mr Yashiki turns up, as usual, some lovely vinyl pieces.  Keep your eyes peeled for a white label copy of Pink Floyd's Pro-Use Dark Side LP (click here for a standard issue reduced in price & in stock now), Iron Maiden's white label advance copies of Maiden, Killers & Number of The Beast, plus just to mix it all up a bit, in the same box a Metallica Whiplash US 12" EP which is virtually unplayed... (click here).  Spanking 'new' new items for us include Walker Bros Best Of LP, GNR Appetite For Destruction white label and Rush's Grace Under Pressure.  Oooh we just adore Japanese vinyl - it's clean (no 'black fingers' handling this lot), it smells nice (it doesn't smell of 'record shops' whatsoever, that is, cigarettes and chip butties) and joy, most of it is mint, mint MINT! More please!

Quintessential English Bands...: When someone recently told me that a particular band 'could only be English' it set me thinking. While there's no hard and fast rules about it, such bands have certain 'characteristics' that state they could only come from this green, pleasant and chav-filed land.
Be it clothing, attitude, singing about cups of tea or London life, there seems to be an eccentricity that marks them down as English.

In no particular order here's my top 5 'English' bands:

The Who - Union Jack imagery and Quadrophenia. Say no more.
The Kinks - Ray Davies' Waterloo Sunset was a 60's timepiece.
The Damned - Original punks who included a grave digger and a bog cleaner who had a number one with Happy Talk!
Echo & The Bunnymen - Ian McCulloch's grumpy (yet witty) northern angst, clothing and haircuts were copied by much of 1980's UK youth.
New Order - One of England's finest exports ever. They should be sponsored by The National Trust or displayed in a museum for future generations.

They're mine - who are yours?

One For Xmas: The other evening I had the privilege of attending a talk and book launch of Hunter Davies’s autobiography ‘The Beatles, Football and Me’.

Hunter Davies is one of the most well-known and respected sports writers in the country but is best known is musical circles as the man who has written the ONLY authorized biography of The Beatles it has become a worldwide bestseller that defines the band that defined an era.

In this behind-the-scenes look at the most famous musical group in history, Hunter gives the complete story of the Beatles. He had full access to the Fab Four as well as their help and encouragement. He spent eighteen months with them when they were at the peak of their musical genius and at the pinnacle of their popularity, and he remained friends with each of the members as they went their separate ways. The warmth in which he spoke about the, Paul, George and Ringo showed not only a deep respect for them as artists but also as friends. He was very supportive of Paul’s current marital problems and very dismissive of that day’s newspaper headlines.

His personal anecdotes about Beatles recording sessions, getting stuck in an Indian restaurant in Bangor with the four of them fretting over not having the cash to pay for the meal was one of many tales I had never heard before and had never appeared in any publications before. Hunter also treated us to the “world premier” of unseen footage of Paul and Linda McCartney on holiday with the Davies’s in Portugal1968. The new book is full of wonderful observations, warm humour and colourful anecdotes.

Sex Pistols figures: Finally!  I was told of the John & Sid figures over a year ago, but the manufacturers have delayed the production of these little beauties time and again.  Then suddenly, out of the blue, I get a call that they are in the country - and 24 hours later BINGO - they arrive at eil towers.  Top notch they are too, Sid complete with sneer, Lydon in full-throated snarl - it's just a pity they didn't do a limited run of Steve Jones & Paul Cook figures to go with them.  Never mind.  rumour on the grapevine is that the same company is planning a set of Clash figures - as soon as I get any info I'll let y'all know

Your only chance to own this - Guaranteed!: The Pet Shop Boys are without doubt one of the most collectable bands of the 80's and there are a plethora of items from around the globe, both commercial and promotional, to suit every collectors taste, but from time to time an item crops up that takes even the most serious collectors breath away and this is that item. The legendary official 1993 UK Parlophone 7" pressed on BLUE VINYL. It's well documented in PSB circles and it's been confirmed that only 3 of these were pressed on blue vinyl (and 3 on red vinyl). It's considered to be the jewel in the crown of any serious collection and until recently all 3 copies were owned by the same collector (how's that for dedicated) but he has finally let one go to finance yet another PSB rarity, so now for the first and probably only time we are able to offer this fabulous rarity to other collectors, but be quick as I know this won't be around for long!

SEX !!!!: Just Kidding ...

Another busy weekend ahead. Tonight is little Tommy Palmer at a local hostelry where a splendid time is guaranteed for all and their range of good beers is extraordinary.
Tomorrow night is the very wonderful Wilko Johnson Band at another local hostelry where I can be viewed pirouetting in a rather disturbing way on the top of a bar stool, which seems to be what usually happens when I attend a Wilko gig.
To cap it all, I shall be back here working to supply you all with wonderous goodies on Saturday.
So, if you intend to phone in this Saturday, please phone quietly as I may be a little delicate !

Have a fun weekend !

PS - If you are one of the lovely people who insist on wandering past my bedroom window at 3AM on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays yelling at the top of your voice - Please stop !!
It's not very nice of you, it keeps me awake & it makes me have strange unnatural thoughts involving mincers & external body parts and I'm quite a peaceable chap at heart.
Thanks.

you gotta pick a PUZZLE or two....: ...So sang Ron Moody in the rehearsals for Lional Bart's 'Oliver' before they realised that a gang of street urchins roaming Victorian London looking for jigsaw puzzles to steal may not make such a great movie, so changed it to 'gotta pick a pocket or two' and the rest is history.  If Fagin were around today and were sending a crack team of thieving youngsters to do his dirty work, top of his list no doubt would be the superb Beatles and Elvis puzzles that arrived here at Eil Towers this week.  Both brand new and hot off the press [or however they make puzzles these days] there are three Beatles titles [here, here and here] and two from Mr Presley [here and here] - get yourself an early Christmas present for a friend or loved-one, or maybe just ignore the lot of them and buy them for yourself - you're only young once!  Now, where was I.... 'I'm reviewing, the situation.....'

Greece Was The Word: Hi Everyone.  Long time, no Blog. I was busy doing very little in Greece on holiday. Catching up with all of the new releases has been quite a chore, but my favorite new album by far is the new Robin Thicke album, “The Evolution Of Robin Thicke,” and most notably the album track “I Want Everything That I Can’t Have.”  Rather than listen to all the new releases on my iPod while sitting on the beach and staring at the sea, I listened to classics from yesteryear.  I was told by two passing French tourists that my choices of Mylene Farmer and Pet Shop Boys were “too gay.” Then they strolled over to the nearest gay bar to listen to a 3-hour loop of Hung Up by Madonna followed by another solid hour of Loleatta Holloway’s fantastic, updated version of Love Sensation ’06 I guess being “too gay” is somewhat subjective! As I get back into work-mode, watch our site this weekend for American limited edition album exclusives by Olivia Newton-John, The Killers, and Platinum Weird – the new project from Dave Stewart of Eurythmics.

ONJ or OCD - you decide:

Many moons ago (July 1999 to be exact) we bought what must have been the single largest Olivia Newton-John collection in the world. You name it, he had it. Toomorrow singles, demos, LPs, posters, scrapbooks, displays and just about every other ONJ worldwide release on 7", LP and CD. But this was a bit different to your average collection; he had quantities. Not just 2 or 3, oh no, much too simple. Some titles were represented by a staggering number of multiple copies, for example, 50+ of the Japanese Crystal Lady LP, at least 20 of each Japanese EMI 7" single, 50+ of most UK EMI and Pye singles - you get the idea? It was as complete an ONJ collection as you are ever likely to see. Today I rediscovered a few boxes that I'd filed away for a rainy day and amongst the numerous unplayed/mint condition original LPs was a shoebox crammed full of photographs - there were 1357 of them (yes, I counted 'em all). I'm in the process of sorting through them to determine what's there but at first glance they appear to date mostly from the late 1970s. There are many candids, paparazzi, publicity and fan club images, live on stage, photos of TV appearances (including some that are quite literally photographs of the TV screen when ONJ appearances were broadcast), and, last but by no means least, photographs of 3 houses where ONJ once lived plus, drum roll please, the entrance to the maternity ward where she was born ! Go on, see if you can beat that...

Minty Fresh in Mexico:
My weekend was good: I got some old capitol label 60's Mexican LP's in NM condition !!! ...I should be making something wrong as from the last couple of weeks til now everywhere I turn around I see records in unplayed condition - I think it must be a lucky month as this is usually the biggest problem I have buying in Mexico... condition, condition, condition .   I have some great items held sourced from Colombia including coloured vinyls by Shakin Stevens and Kraftwerk plus the incredibly difficult Shakira peligro LP and the Madonna Veras & Amazing promotional CDs (click here for more Madonna South American pressings)    This week I am told there is going to be released a Rasmus CD+bonus live in Mexico City tracks, will see what I can pick up...

The Quiet One......: Wow! It's been a while since we stocked one of these - George Harrisons unrealeased Shanghai Suprise promo-only one sided 7", recorded for the movie of the same name (Featuring Madonna). The value of this 7" has increased greatly over the last couple of years with the few that were made disappearing into Beatle collections they just don't turn up anymore. It would make a great investment piece or maybe it's the one thing missing from your collection, either way it's unlikely to be around for long so don't delay....

Lost In France....: I've just arrived back in the office after a quick jaunt to Paris with Julian to visit the regular record fair. Though the pickings were on the slim side with a distinct lack of juicy collectables we did dig deep and unearth a few gems including a Malaysian original Rolling Stones Goats Head Soup LP with a fantastic unique picture sleeve, a Bridges To Babylon limited edition box set plus a couple of rare German Agnetha 7" for all you ABBA fans.

Being a French fair there is the usual glut of Mylene Farmer items including the legendary Live At Bercy 'Spider', only the second one we've ever seen! Plus various rare promo bits and bobs such as the Anamorphosee box set and Libertine 12". Please be patient though as it will take a few days to get everthing added to the website, so keep checking back.

On the food front I feel like I've eaten by own bodyweight in Jambon Baguettes and Bolognaise flavour crisps - viva la difference!

French fancies in sunny Brighton...: A quantity of French-only promo CD titles have been sourced whilst on a day out at the seaside. Despite being October, the sun was shining, scantily clad women were strolling along the prom and i was buying some great stock including a rare Smiths CD 'Handsome Devils' and one from Morrissey titled 'Family Line'.

An ice-cream walking along the beach, a kiss-me-quick hat then driving home past The Withdean Stadium listening to BHA FC getting stuffed by Blackpool on the radio. What a wonderful day...

more PAUL WELLER news: The BBC announced today that Paul Weller will be the performer opening the inaugural BBC Electric Proms at the Roundhouse, Camden on Wednesday 25th October.
For BBC Electric Proms, the man credited as the elder statesman of pop will create a one-off performance of unique collaborations with heritage and contemporary artists. He will also perform classic tracks from his 30-year career, as well as debuting new, previously unheard material.
When asked about his BBC Electric Proms performance Weller commented 'I've not played at the Roundhouse since 1977 so it will be quite nice to go back. I suppose it reminds me of my youth, when I first started playing in London'.
Other artists scheduled to perform include The Magic Numbers, The Zutons and The Fratellis

Back on the road: After recovery from my poor cooking and food poisoning I visited a local store and found some really good items like a Hendrix Electric Ladyland Grammophon pressing (with SMT catalogue number) complete with an obi... this will be in my next shipment but you can see some of current rare Hendrix Japanese pressings by clicking here.  All of the items I bought along with this were MINT and I cannot believe the superb quality of this particular LP.  Amazing.

I found another copy of the rare Japanese Elvis quad LP for 'On Stage February 1970' at a really good price so you can now take advantage of this by clicking here and you'll see what a bargain price we can offer this at right now.

I am thinking about the next city I need to visit for buying and I already miss the Yamachan chicken wing restaurant - much better than my cooking and no food poisoning.

Calendar Update.....: Some of you may have noticed that a few of the proposed calendar for 2007 have recently disappeared off the screen, so I thought I'd let you know why.  Earlier this year I received a list of proposed calendars for 2007 - ones where the bands had been approached and said 'yes' to producing a calendar [I received the list in early March!].  After much too-ing and fro-ing between the calendar companies and the artists some of the bands by last week had still not approved some of the images for the calendar [in Shakiras case, none of the 12 pictures were approved after 6 months], and so the calendars for these bands have been cancelled, so if you're looking for a Placebo, Britney Spears, Chili Peppers, Shakira and more, the only reason I haven't got them is that they don't do them - but I'm still looking......

The Horrors.....:

We have just had details of the Horrors American CD single - If you haven't been lucky enough to grab either of the two limited 7" singles, here's your chance to get both - and with an extra track and the acclaimed video for oddball-genius director Chris Cunningham.  The band are about to tour the UK on the NME sponsered Rock & Roll Riot tour - get along if you can - they make a great racket live even if they only appear on stage for a very short time.  I've already ordered my copy, I recommend you do the same.

Shakira Fever:
Shakira fever has arrived Mexico City she is going to play 8 concerts and all of them sold-out, she started on saturday which was the one I attend ...sound was good, at least she is bringing better equipment than in previous tours (have seen her in 3 different) ...everything was good except for that she was wearing for the first half of the show a 'HORRIBLE' pajama pants, I tried to figure if it was a pajama or some 'karate' pants, then she changed to a kind of 50's baby doll and then put a sexy skirt returning to the 'karate' pants .... there were no tour programs this time, just some official poor quality t-shirts that I decided not to get!  Besides the Shakira experience (click here to experience Shakira at eil), I also have some great genuinely autographed cds including Rammstein and Steve Vai.

I have heard that on November there is going to be a new U2 best of cd, the question is, a best of HTDAAB and HTDAAB ?? ... je je...more from me soon....

Amazing BPI certified vinyl award discs:

Recently acquired has been some prime examples of genuine award discs that are:
a) BPI certified (rather than the more common in-house variety) and
b) the vinyl format, which to my mind, always look nicer than the CD awards that are obviously the norm nowadays.

3 titles are a silver award for the classic Stone Roses debut album, a GOLD award for Elvis Costello's Armed Forces LP and finally a silver award for John Lee Hookers Mr Lucky album.

Check these and our other 100% genuine award discs here...
