| BEST NEW ACT |
Let us begin then with the fresh faced and aspirational new young pups. Q magazine is one of the best publications for championing new bands and their readers have chosen wisely. The UK's Electric Soft Parade picked up this award. |

The nominees in this category will all be used to the awards trail so far this year. All of them have been nominated in other awards. As yet the only victors have been The Cooper Temple Clause, who won a Kerrang award as the 'Best New British Band'. The Coral, The Bees and Electric Soft Parade were Mercury nominees, while The Vines are up for an ARIA Award or two in their homeland. |

| BEST SINGLE |
At the awards nominations ceremony the crowd made their favourite for this award very clear. When it came to the full awards ceremony there was another surprise in this category. As soon as a certain Mr Gary Numan stepped up to award the winners it was no surprise that the elecro-pop crossover hit 'Freak Like Me' by the Sugababes was the winner. |

| BEST VIDEO |
The high brow musical know-how of 'Q' readers slips slightly when nominating for this category. From the slightly pop orientated selection the voters decided upon Pink.... |

| BEST PRODUCER |
The oft over looked aspect of the great albums. In fact the winner is probably even more overlooked as a producer than the rest. Being as how his day job is making the music !! It was Moby. |

| BEST LIVE ACT |
Whether they were packing them in across the university circuit, stuffing the arenas and stadia, or dragging thousands of die-hards across many-a field...these were THE live acts of the last year. It must have been the smart suits and matching hair styles. Or was it the manic punk fuelled garage explosion that wowed the voters ?? |

| BEST ALBUM |
While a certain Ms. Dynamite cleaned up the Mercury and MOBO Awards, and Hundred Reasons were the Kerrang winners of the Best Album accolade the 'Q' readers were otherwise impressed. They instead have been the first awards of 2002 to go for Coldplay. No doubt the first of many awards for the group and this album. |

| BEST ACT IN THE WORLD EVER |
This is the BIG award to win on the night. The nominations seemed slightly controversial, rewarding a band not on their current output but on some past success. So in the view of Q readers the Best Act ever are Radiohead. |

| 'Q' UNWANTED |
A new category at this year's awards which has pleased many of the readers. Spreading just a little vitriol in the direction of the 'Pop Star/Idol/Rivals' presenters is a bit obvious but these nominees did come from the 'Q' readers so it shows we don't all follow the 'Pop/TV' trend. Thankfully. The nominees chosen were Pete Waterman, Geri Halliwell and Simon Cowell. All their crimes are so heinous that we could not relay them here in full. The inaugural vote went to Simon Cowell. |

| 'Q' MAGAZINE MERIT AWARD |
The 'Merit' Award is one of three voted for exclusively by the Q staff. The award recognises an artist who has touched a wide range of people. It rewards not simply musical achievement but longevity, style and charisma. Previous winners of the Q Merit Award include Keith Richards, Paul McCartney, Sir Elton and Jerry Dammers among others. This year's winner is a man who EVERYONE could sing a song by. They all have an opinion, and none are bad. He is a national treasure to not only Wales alone but the United Kingdom as a whole. |

| CLASSIC SONGWRITER AWARD |
The Classic Songwriter is chosen as a person who has created legendary songs. Music that is timeless and relevant across the decades. Previous winners include Ian Dury, Morrissey, Van Morrison, Elvis Costello and Paul Weller. The 2002 winner of Classis Songwriter at the Q Awards was Jimmy Cliff. Jimmy was one of the earliest reggae musicians and songwiters to cross over from the country wide success in Jamaica to broader fame across the world. He has written and recorded countless classic tracks such as 'The Harder They Come', 'Wonderful World, Beautiful People' and 'Many Rivers To Cross' |

| 'Q' INNOVATION IN MUSIC AWARD |
The 'Q Innovation' Award is yet another decided upon by the staff of the magazine. And in this it's inaugural year the journalists settled on a band who fulfills the criteria of 'creativity, invention and courage in the face of adversity'. British born but bred across the globe. Early electro-pioneers and stadium rock gods. Inspirational adventurers and creators of classic songs. They have survived over two decades in the music business and can truly claim to one of the most innovative British bands ever. Depeche Mode formed in Essex, England in 1980. Their sound was formed around the basis of synths, drums and sampling, it was an original noise that has influenced generations of artists. Early UK success, their first 12 albums all went into the Top 10 Album charts, spread to cross the USA and world. And it was late 1980's albums 101 and then Violator that propelled them into the stadium filling realms of the biggest bands in the world. A rock'n'roll lifestyle has seen the band's line-up alter, as well as members suffer near death experiences. Now in 2002 they are honoured with this award and are leaving their fans guessing; rumours abound of solo work and the end of the band.... |

| Q INSPIRATION AWARD |
To be granted a 'Q' Inspiration Award and join the hallowed ranks of previous winners such as BB King, John Lydon, Brian Eno and David Bowie, Patti Smith, New Order and Joe Strummer, you have to be great. Echo And The Bunnymen are such a band. They are winners who have inspired hundreds of other bands, promoted their hometown talents and in their day conquered a large chunk of the world. The most important factor in the Inspiration Award though is the devotion and love that the Bunnymen inspire in their die-hard fan base. They are a band to devote to. |
