MOBOs Outstanding Achievement award was another posthumous appraisal of a great life. Lisa Left Eye Lopes of the group TLC died last year in a car crash. Before she died she had been reassessing her career and had taken time off to concentrate on 'her purpose'. A solo album, Supernova, was her first apart from the group, who themselves are to release their fourth album soon as a tribute to their friend.
The Lifetime Achievement, another closely guarded secret, was a shock to many. Chaka Khan was honoured for a career spanning over a quarter of a century which has included dozens of hit singles and some ground breaking albums. Since the mid-70s she has had hit after hit. Classics such as 'Once You Get Started' and 'You Got The Love' in partnership with her group Rufus saw her profile rise. Soon she stepped out as a solo artist, working with soul greats such as Ashford & Simpson, Stevie Wonder and Prince among others. Perhaps her most famous hit is the fantastic 'I'm Every Woman' which was released in 1979 and she performed on the night. But although the Top 10 hits may have gone throughout the 80s and the 90s Chaka Khan worked constantly. She adapted her glorious voice to appear on stage, she sang jazz, R&B and more rock material. The list of people she worked with is a 'Who's Who' of modern music...Miles Davis, Quincey Jones and more. Last year she graced the VH1 Divas concert and this Lifetime Achievment award is rightly deserved.
Among the other winners on the night were Ja Rule for Best Hip Hop Act, The Neptunes for Best Producer and Jimmy Cliff for a Contribution To Urban Music. The Best Reggae Act was Sean Paul and more ladies scooped the MOBOs for Best Gospel and World Music acts, Michelle Williams and Angelique Kidjo respectively. |
