2002 ARIA Award Winners, Losers and more...

This was the year that the Australian Recording Industry Awards (ARIAs) wanted some global publicity and get some they did. A certain Miss Minogue turned up unexpectedly for the awards, after initially filming planned video thank-you's. She had fled the UK at the weekend and so when she got back home she attended in person, wowing the crowds.

There were lots of live performances on the night, including Holly Valance. Her version of 'Kiss Kiss' opened the precedings, later turns came from TaxiRide, Alex Lloyd and Grinspoon.

So who won what ? The big winners were Kylie, Silverchair and Kasey Chambers.

Kylie won for Best Pop Release and Biggest-selling Single for 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head'. Her album 'Fever' was the Biggest-selling Album and Best Pop Album. She also received the outstanding achievement award.

The other top awards were shared between Silverchair and Kasey Chambers. She won the Album Of the Year for 'Barricades & Brickwalls', also picking up the Best Female Artist and Best Country Award. While the Aussy rockers were Best Group with the Best Rock Album for 'Diorama'.

The awards that were left got shared out evenly ! The Best Male was won by Alex Lloyd. The Vines, who had handfuls of nominations, picked up their solitary prize for Best New Artist - Single for 'Get Free'. They lost out to george for the Best New Artist - Album'. Her opening performance was the only time that Holly Valance graced the stage, but that will surely change next year.

History Of The ARIAs

The first ARIAs were held back in 1987. That year the biggest winner was John Farnham, who scooped five awards. Also picking up ARIA's that year were two groups who would vie to be the most famous Australian groups since the ceremony began. Crowded House and Inxs have between them been winners over thirty times !!

Throughout the years the small recording industry of Australia has steadily created some of the biggest names in world rock music. These artists have all been honoured by the Australian Recording Industry at one time or another.

Acts such as Jimmy Barnes, Icehouse, Baby Animals and Tina Arena have all been honoured on numerous occasions. But the most successful Australian recording artist in terms of winning ARIAs are Crowded House, who before splitting up in 1999, won an incredible 22 nominations and 10 awards.
